Couch to Consistent Prayer

General Guidelines

This is a 1-month plan (30 day) prayer programme where you start small and gradually extend prayer time, depth, and variety. Each week has a theme, a daily structure, and suggested progression.

  • Aim for consistency over intensity.
  • If you miss a day, don't quit — just pick up where you left off.
  • If you need to repeat a week — that's fine!
  • Use a journal if possible, to jot down reflections like “how I felt before/after prayer, what or who did I pray about, what did I sense God saying, what am I going to do as a result of today’s prayer?”

General Guidance

Each session should include:

1. Stillness (quiet for 30–60s, preparing your heart)

You might find it helpful to use the opening phrase:

‘As I enter prayer now, I pause to be still; to breathe slowly, to re-centre my scattered senses upon the presence of God.’

Or

‘We start by pausing and taking a deep breath:
In and out.
In and out.
We remember that God is here, and so together we prepare ourselves to be with God.’

2. Prayer practice (guided by the plan)

You might find it helpful to start this section with a prayer like this:

Loving God, as we draw near to You, please draw near to us too. Teach us to pray. Speak, Lord, we’re listening.

3. Reflection (thanksgiving, journaling, or silence to close).

You might find the following prayer a helpful one to close with:

Let's put a hand on our heart.
Father God, fill us with Your love. Help us to love You, and everything that You've made.

Let's point to our eyes.
Lord Jesus, help us to see You, and to see others the way that You see them too.

Let's point to our ears.
Holy Spirit, help us to hear You, and give us courage to do what You say.
